Jovian Impacts Detection Software
Help using the DTC software
Marc Delcroix has posted a comprenhensive tutorial in both English and French.
Here we only point out the original instructions used with the previous versions of the software but the reader is referred to the link above which
provides extended information.
Short instructions
In Windows the software works under the command line.
Invoke cmd in windows and run dtc.
In Linux the software runs directly from the terminal and no graphic interface is needed.
The software admits several options (help file soon available) as shown on the
screenshot on the right. The default values of this options allow to succesfully detect an impact flash in the original video observations of the June 2010 impact.
dtc -ifile ./June_2010_Impact_Anthony_Wesley.avi
Result:
Impact detected: frame 89 (0h 00min 03s) to 100 (0h 100min 04s). Max lum 92 at frame 90
Additional examples:
To generate a data file with the evolution of light curve and visually inspect the signature of the impact use:
dtc -ifile ./June_2010_Impact_Anthony_Wesley.avi -v > luminance.dat
To generate a summary image of the video based on differential photometry of a reference image and the maximum brightness of each pixel use:
dtc -ifile=June_2010_Impact_Anthony_Wesley.avi -ofile=WesleyADUdtc.png -nsf=ADUdtc
Note that these options can be combined together. The following command will generate the short report above, summary images (see algorithm description bellow) and a luminance file that can be examined in detail.
dtc -ifile ./June_2010_Impact_Anthony_Wesley.avi -v > luminance.dat -ofile=WesleyADUdtc.png -nsf=ADUdtc
